The Elefant heavy tank destroyer was developed from the chassis originally designed by Ferdinand Porsche as the Tiger(P) and was equipped with the powerful 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 anti-tank gun.
Following its initial combat deployments, particularly at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, numerous vehicles underwent modifications. Among the noticeable changes were a bow-mounted machine gun, a commander's cupola, and various other detail improvements. Later vehicles also featured modifications to the rear, including versions with a split rear hatch that facilitated access to the fighting compartment. The Elefant was considered an extremely effective tank destroyer, but its high weight and complex technology resulted in limited mobility and high maintenance costs.
