The Messerschmitt Bf 109 served as the backbone of the Luftwaffe throughout the entire Second World War. In fact, the Bf 109 is the most-produced fighter aircraft in history—nearly 34,000 units were manufactured by April 1945! Numerous variants were developed over the course of the war; the E-series ("Emil") represented the first major overhaul of this highly successful aircraft platform, which inflicted significant losses on Allied and Soviet forces.

Of the 561 aircraft built in the E-4 configuration, 211 were of the E-4/B variant—a fighter-bomber ("Jabo") version. It first saw action in July 1940 during attacks on ships in the English Channel and could be equipped with either a single 250 kg bomb or four 50 kg bombs.
