The ground offensive of Operation Desert Storm took place from February 24 to 28, 1991. American armored units advanced through southern Iraq to outflank Iraqi forces and engage the Republican Guard in particular. Significant tank battles included 73 Easting and Medina Ridge.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the Army deployed 1,772 tanks of the M1A1 series, including 594 equipped with reinforced "Heavy Armor." This armor incorporated depleted uranium; consequently, not all deployed M1A1s featured the same armor configuration. The Marine Corps utilized an additional 76 M1A1s, 60 of which were on loan from the Army.
The Gulf War established the Abrams' reputation as a highly capable main battle tank. At the same time, it demonstrated that logistics and reliable friend-or-foe identification remain crucial factors, even for technologically superior vehicles.
