The Stryker M1296 ICV-Dragoon with ESA-MWO (Enhanced Situational Awareness – Modification Work Order) represents the most modern variant of the M1296 Dragoon within the Stryker vehicle family. This version was developed in response to the increased demands of modern battlefields and the operational experience of the US Army stationed in Europe. While the original M1296 was notable primarily for its significantly increased firepower compared to earlier Stryker infantry carriers, the ESA-MWO upgrade focuses on improved situational awareness, digital connectivity, and crew protection.

It retains the eight-wheeled Stryker chassis, powered by a 350 hp diesel engine, with a top speed of around 100 km/h and a range of approximately 500 kilometers. The vehicle is operated by a two-person crew and can transport up to nine additional infantry soldiers. Its add-on ceramic armor provides protection against heavy machine-gun fire, as well as artillery shrapnel and mines.

Its main armament consists of the unmanned Kongsberg MCT-30 turret equipped with the XM813 Bushmaster II 30×173 mm autocannon, capable of firing armor-piercing, high-explosive, and programmable airburst ammunition. It is complemented by a coaxial 7.62mm M240C machine gun. The unmanned turret allows the entire interior space to be retained for infantry transport.

The ESA-MWO upgrade primarily equips the vehicle with modern sensor technology and electronic systems. Additional daylight and thermal imaging cameras, all-round visibility sensors, new communication systems, extra antennas, and improved digital command and information systems provide the crew with significantly better situational awareness and faster threat detection. At the same time, data exchange with other vehicles and higher-level command posts is vastly improved, enabling faster target detection, identification, and engagement. Thus, the upgrade enhances combat capability—through vastly improved situational awareness and network connectivity—rather than simply increasing firepower.

Externally, the ESA-MWO version is distinguished by additional sensors, camera housings, antennas, modified stowage baskets, and numerous external cables and electronic assemblies. These details give the vehicle a more modern appearance and make it one of the most technically advanced variants in the Stryker family. With its combination of high mobility, effective 30mm weaponry, and modern sensor technology, the M1296 ICV-Dragoon with ESA-MWO represents a crucial stepping stone toward future generations of the US Army's Stryker fleet.
