The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF).
Designed as a daytime air superiority fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multi-role aircraft.
The F-16I is a two-seat variant of the Block 52 developed for the Israeli Air Force.
Following an Israeli tender in 1997, the first ones entered service in 2004.
Approximately 50% of the avionics were replaced with avionics developed in Israel.
The F-16I can deploy Rafael's Python 5 infrared-guided air-to-air missile and often uses removable fuel tanks (from Israel Aerospace Industries) attached to the fuselage to increase its range.
The most important American-made systems include the F100-PW-229 turbofan engine.
The F-16 is known to its pilots as the ‘Viper’, in reference to the Battlestar Galactica starfighter.
