Developed by Hotchkiss in the mid-1930s, the 25 mm Modèle 1934 Type I anti-tank gun was France's first standardized light anti-tank weapon—a compact and innovative design for its time.
Designed to counter the growing threat of armored warfare, it formed the cornerstone of the French Army's early anti-tank capabilities during the Battle of France (1940).
Its relatively high rate of fire, ease of transport, and ability to engage early German armored vehicles made it an indispensable component of French field tactics.
Thanks to its mobility, the gun could be quickly relocated, towed by light vehicles, or even moved manually by small crews.
Although it was surpassed by heavier tanks later in the war, the 25 mm Hotchkiss remains an iconic example of interwar military technology—a testament to France's technological innovation and tactical flexibility.
