Caproni Ca.312 "Italian Export Bomber’"

In the late 1930s, the Italian company Caproni began producing the light twin-engine Ca.310 bomber and the more powerful Ca.311 for the Italian Air Force. These aircraft types also attracted interest from foreign customers. Belgium ordered the Ca.310, while Norway ordered the Ca.311—albeit with more powerful engines. Initially, Caproni offered Belgium the Ca.312 Belge (based on the Ca.310); ultimately, however, the production aircraft for both countries were manufactured based on the Ca.311. They differed only in the design of the nose section: the Belgian aircraft featured a stepped nose, whereas the Norwegian ones were equipped with a smooth, streamlined nose in the style of the He 111. Unlike the Ca.311, they featured substantial engine cowlings, three-blade propellers, and modified landing gear. Caproni managed to complete two Ca.312 units before Belgium and Norway were occupied by the German Wehrmacht and both orders were cancelled. The unfinished batch of 24 aircraft was taken over by the Italian Regia Aeronautica. They were deployed as transport aircraft in Italy, Africa, and on the Eastern Front. Two aircraft served as air ambulances on the Eastern Front; they were painted entirely white and bore Red Cross markings.
