The M1919 was an air-cooled development of the standard US machine gun of World War I, the water-cooled M1917 designed by John M. Browning.
The A4 is the final and most widely produced version of the Browning M1919 machine gun and was manufactured from 1936 onward.
It saw service with the US in World War II in Korea and Vietnam.
However, from the 1950s onward, it was increasingly replaced by newer machine guns such as the M60.
