In 1981, when the Soviet Union learned that new main battle tanks such as the M1 and Leopard 2 were entering service with NATO forces, it immediately decided to upgrade the T-72 main battle tank to maintain deterrence against the enemy.
This modernization project was called "Object 184".
In 1984, this latest variant of the T-72 was given the designation T-72B.
In keeping with Russian tradition, some of these upgraded tanks had simpler equipment and could not fire missiles from the cannon.
These tanks were given the designation T-72B1. The most noticeable changes to the T-72B/B1 compared to the T-72A were the new turret, called the Dolly Parton by NATO armies, and the Kontact-1 ERA blocks covering the hull and turret.
Between 1985 and 1989, the Soviet Union produced a total of 3,435 tanks.
The T-72B1 tanks have been in service with the Russian army for a long time.
Before they were replaced by the T-72B3 or T-90, they were the most reliable tanks in the armored forces.
