The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 4x4 was the winning vehicle of the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, impressively demonstrating that a Porsche 911 could be competitive even under extreme desert conditions. The car was campaigned by René Metge and his co-driver Dominique Lemoyne for the Rothmans Porsche team.

It was based on the 911 Carrera 3.2, which underwent extensive modifications for rally competition. A particularly notable feature was the all-wheel-drive system, which gave the Porsche significant advantages on sand, rocky terrain, and challenging tracks. The vehicle also featured a reinforced body and suspension components, significantly increased ground clearance, large off-road tires, and an enlarged fuel tank for long stages.

The car was powered by a 3.2-liter flat-six engine, tuned to produce around 300 hp for competition use. The bodywork was fitted with widened fenders, a distinctive front guard, additional lighting, and comprehensive equipment for desert operations.

At the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, René Metge prevailed against strong competition to claim overall victory. This marked a spectacular success for Porsche in one of the toughest motorsport events of the era.
