The first encounters with the T-34 in the USSR in 1941 were a shock to the invading German troops, who had been very successful with their tank forces up to that point.
Their answer was the Panther, which first saw action in 1943.
It featured sloped armor, a powerful Maybach engine and a powerful 7.5 cm gun - all in all an impressive combination of firepower, mobility and survivability that proved a boon for the German forces and a problem for the Allies.
