In order to adapt the M60A1 to the threat posed by the then latest generation of Soviet main battle tanks, it was decided to modernize it extensively.
The optical range finder was replaced by a laser range finder. The optics of the laser rangefinder also served as an observation for the commander.
The electromechanical calculator was replaced by an electronic one.
This also included the cross wind sensor on the roof.
The barrel received a thermal sleeve.
Smoke grenade launchers were installed on both sides of the turret.
The coaxial machine gun was now of the M240 type.
