In October 1942, the M4 tanks in service with the British Army fought at El Alamein.
They were named after the famous American Civil War general Sherman.
In the second half of 1944, the M4A3 (76) W, equipped with a high-velocity M1 cannon with a 76 mm barrel, entered service.
Although it had limited ability to support infantry operations due to the lower explosive power of the 76 mm shells, it had a much stronger anti-tank capability.
When firing the T4 HVAP ammunition, it could penetrate armor up to 178 mm thick at a distance of 1000 m.
Even with the standard M62 APC, it could penetrate armor up to 109 mm.
This was enough to penetrate the frontal armor of the hull of the German Tiger I heavy tank.
By the end of WWII, the M4 Sherman tank family had expanded into a large family with several variants.
A total of 49234 M4 tanks were built, making it one of the most produced tanks of WWII.
