The Hien was the only Japanese fighter to be equipped with a liquid-cooled engine in the Pacific War, the Ha40, a license production of the Daimler-Benz DB601 engine from Germany.
It featured a streamlined nose and an extended main wing, unique for a liquid cooler.
Officially introduced in 1943 as a Type 3 fighter, its armament was increased several times to counter the robust US military aircraft.
Among them was the Type I, which had an extended nose of 20cm and was equipped with two 20mm cannons in the fuselage and two 12.7mm cannons in the main wing.
From January 1944 to January 1945 a series of approximately 1360 aircraft were produced.
He used his excellent high-altitude performance and heavy armament to flex his power in intercepting the B-29s in the Battle of Japan.
