Given the growing strength of opposing air forces and the urgent need for Stukas, the aircraft required modernization. Consequently, the Ju 87D variant was put into production.
It featured aerodynamic refinements and was equipped with a more powerful version of the Jumo 211 engine. While the Ju 87D-3 variant retained standard-span wings, the Ju 87D-5 and subsequent versions utilized wings with an increased span. The Ju 87D saw service with the Luftwaffe in Africa, the Mediterranean theater, and on the Eastern Front. The air forces of Germany's allies—Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia—also operated this aircraft. As the strength of the Anti-Hitler Coalition grew, some Ju 87D aircraft fell into the hands of British and American units.
