In the 1950s, the Israel Armored Forces were equipped with outdated M50 and M51 Sherman and AMX-13 light tanks, but lacked modern main battle tanks. At Israel's request, Britain ended up providing around 390 used Centurion Mk. III and MK. V delivered. However, they were quickly adapted to local conditions and given the title "Sho't" (Eng. "Whip").

The Sh'ot Kal (which stands for "Continental", simplified to "Cal") can be easily distinguished from the non-converted tanks by its raised engine deck. This modification was necessary to accommodate a larger and more efficient American diesel engine. The vehicles feature a new Continental AVDS-1790-2A diesel engine mated to an Allison CD850-6 transmission. In addition, they were equipped with American radios and 7.62 mm Browning machine guns.

The Sho't Kal have seen continuous improvements throughout their service life, including a new turret rotation mechanism, a new gun stabilizer, a new fire control system, and Blazer add-on armor.
