The British battle cruiser Hood, built in May 1920, had a displacement of 48,360 tons As flagship of the Royal Navy for almost 20 years, she was considered one of the largest warships in the world.
On May 23, 1941, the Hood was joined by the battleship Prince of Wales, two F-class destroyers and two E-class destroyers as they went in pursuit of the massive German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.
On the morning of the 24th, Hood attacked the German ships and fired on Prinz Eugen.
The German ships returned fire, with Hood being hit by the Bismarck.
The hit penetrated her deck, detonating her ammunition and resulting in an explosion that blew the Hood in half.
Along with the loss of its flagship, the Royal Navy also suffered the loss of 1,416 men, its largest loss of the Second World War.
The two E-class destroyers accompanying Hood, Echo and Electra escaped unscathed.
Echo and Electra were built in 1934 and had a displacement of 1,350 tons and a top speed of 36 knots.
Echo subsequently performed convoy duty in the Arctic and Mediterranean, while Electra served in the Pacific, including the Battle of Malaya and the Battle of the Java Sea.
