Japan entered the world of endurance racing in 1980 with the launch of the "Suzuka 8 Hours" race.
Honda is synonymous with Japanese motorcycle engineering and was one of the early Japanese pioneers in endurance racing. As early as 1976, the RCB—a racing model based on the CB750—achieved an impressive seven victories in eight races and laid the foundation for the CB900F, a road-going replica featuring a 900cc DOHC engine. The CB900F, in turn, served as the basis for the Honda RS1000, developed to comply with new regulations introduced after the endurance racing series attained World Championship status in 1980. Its air-cooled, 16-valve DOHC inline-four engine was bored out to 999cc and produced over 130 hp. While the chassis initially featured a relatively conventional layout with telescopic front forks and a rear swingarm, the front end was equipped with an anti-dive system in 1981—coinciding with the installation of larger fairing components—and the RS1000 underwent continuous development throughout its racing career. In 1980, the rider duo of Fontan and Moineau secured the Riders' Championship as well as Honda's fifth consecutive Constructors' title. The following year, the RS1000 competed in all eight races; although the title ultimately went to Kawasaki, the Honda RS1000 celebrated a victory in front of a home crowd at the "Suzuka 8 Hours" race held in July.
