After British tanks saw action in the First World War, Germany developed its own tank – the A7V. This tank weighed 30 tons. Its crew typically consisted of 16 to 18 men, sometimes up to 26. This made it the tank with the largest crew in the world. It was based on an improved Holt tractor chassis and was powered by two Daimler engines with a combined output of 200 hp. Its armament consisted of a 57 mm Maxim Nordenfelt QF gun and six 7.92 mm Maxim MG 08 machine guns. Due to wartime resource scarcity, the A7V's side armor plates, manufactured by Krupp AG, were assembled from multiple sections. The A7V entered service in January 1918.

As the first German tank, the A7V laid the foundation for the development of German tanks.
