Heavy tractor 18t "FAMO" and low-loader trailer for Pz.Kpfw. Sd.Ah.116

As the Second World War progressed, the vehicles used on the battlefields became larger and larger. When these gigantic machines broke down or were damaged, it was not easy to bring them back from the front.
This was especially true for the German Wehrmacht, which fought in a wide variety of theatres of war:
From the scorching deserts of North Africa to the railway-less plains of Russia.
Repatriating damaged vehicles from these difficult conditions was essential to maintain the army's fighting strength.
The German 18 tonne half-track "FAMO" and tank transporter Sd.Ah.116 was one of the vehicles that fulfilled this task.
Including all variants, over 2500 18 tonne half-track vehicles were produced by the end of the Second World War.
One of the most important types was the vehicle for tank recovery, a powerful towing vehicle with two rows of seats and a flatbed in the rear on which equipment such as a drawbar and a spare rope could be stored.
On the outside of the flatbed were storage compartments for tools.
In addition, the underside of the vehicle was equipped with a winch.
The vehicle was powered by a Maybach HL 108 12-cylinder engine with an output of 270 hp.

Tanks were transported either by pulling them directly with a drawbar or by loading the tank onto a trailer.
Officially called "Sd.Ah.116", the type 116 trailer was connected to the 18 tonne half-track, which allowed the transport of 22-23 tonne class tanks such as the Pz.Kpfw.III or IV.
