The IMAM Ro.44 was a fighter loatplane developed in Italy.
It was a single-seat derivative of the Ro.43 that first flew in October 1936.
While the Ro.43 had serious problems, the Ro.44 was a complete failure.
The R.43 was armed with two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose, the rear fuselage was redesigned to eliminate the observer position, and the tail unit was modified. Overall, performance remained almost identical to that of the Ro.43, although the Ro.44 was more manoeuvrable.
Although she was quite fast, her actual performance (and seaworthiness) were so poor that only 35 of 51 ordered were produced.
They were used exclusively in the Aegean, with the 161 Squadriglia having seven at the start of the Second World War.
However, these were soon withdrawn from the front and given to seaplane schools.
