The Soviet MiG-21MF was an exported multirole version of the famous MiG-21 family and belonged to the third generation of the "Fishbed" variant. Developed in the late 1960s by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau, it was intended to perform both air superiority and limited fighter-bomber roles. NATO designated this version "Fishbed-J". The MiG-21MF was exported to numerous Warsaw Pact countries, as well as to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and saw action in conflicts including the Vietnam War and the Arab-Israeli Wars.

Technically, the MiG-21MF was distinguished by its compact delta-wing design, high speed, and ease of maintenance. It was powered by the Tumansky R-13-300 turbojet with afterburner, enabling speeds exceeding Mach 2. Compared to earlier MiG-21 versions, the MF featured an improved RP-22S radar, modernized avionics, and four external hardpoints for air-to-air missiles, bombs, or unguided rocket pods. Standard armament included the twin-barreled 23 mm GSh-23L cannon. Despite its good climb rate and maneuverability, the aircraft continued to suffer from limited range and relatively basic electronics compared to Western fighter jets of its time.

The MiG-21MF was nevertheless considered an extremely robust and cost-effective fighter aircraft. In total, over 10,000 MiG-21s of all versions were produced, making it the most produced supersonic fighter aircraft in history. Numerous modernized aircraft remained in service well into the 21st century.
