During World War II, the US military developed the M10 tank destroyer with a 76.2 mm cannon, but it was ineffective against German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther.
The M36 was based on the M10A1 hull, was equipped with a 450 hp gasoline engine, and featured a new open turret and a 90 mm cannon.
The M36 first saw service on the Franco-German border in October 1944 and remained in service until the German surrender in May 1945.
Over 1,000 M36s were deployed in 21 battalions, contributing to the advance of the Allied forces.
