The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 15 November 1932.
On the day the war began in the Pacific (7.12.1941), the Indianapolis took part in an exercise as flagship of the Scouting Force US Fleet.
In March 1943, she became the flagship of Task Force 58, which consisted of 130,000 Marines and Army troops under the command of Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance, Commander Fifth Fleet....
The Indianapolis led the Giant Fleet and was involved in most of the major battles in the Central Pacific.
In March 1945, the vessel was badly damaged and returned to dock at Mare Island for repairs.
During the two-month overhaul, all equipment was brought up to date.
After repairs, the Indianapolis picked up secret cargo and personnel in San Francisco and on 16 July made her way to Tinian Island, where a B29 bomber base was located.
She arrived there on 26 July to unload the cargo and personnel.
Four days later the Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank after two hits,
