In the second half of the war, the Model 22 was further developed into the Model 52 to combat new US aircraft such as the P-38 Lightning and the F4U Corsair.
It had 50 cm shorter wings with rounded wingtips, single exhaust pipes and a top speed of 565 km/h.
The A6M5a was produced in February 1944 with a larger ammunition capacity (125 rounds).
The Model 52 was first used in the final phase of the Solomon Islands campaign in autumn 1943 and fought until the end of the war over the Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Japan itself.
