One of the most famous stories from the Second World War is the interrogation of a captured British tank soldier after the Battle of Halfaya Pass.
"In my opinion", he said, "it is unfair to use flak against our tanks".
A German artilleryman nearby replied, "All right, but I think it is most unfair for you to attack with tanks whose armour can only be penetrated by an 88."
Originally intended as an anti-aircraft gun, the gun's superb anti-tank capability became legendary when it was used in the North African desert against the heavily armoured British Matilda tanks.

The German 8.8cm Flak is one of the most famous artillery weapons of the Second World War.
It was developed to combat aircraft at high altitude and was first used for anti-tank purposes during the invasion of France in 1940, where it proved extremely powerful.
The gun struck fear into the hearts of Allied tank crews in Russia and North Africa.
